Brazil’s Federal Police have recommended corrupt charges against Rio de Janeiro Governor Cláudio Castro for allegedly misappropriating funds destined for social programs during his tenure as a councilor and lieutenant governor.
The police made this recommendation earlier this month, with details only being disclosed by news outlet Uol. Pending further action from the Federal Prosecution Office and the acceptance of charges by the Superior Court of Justice, Mr. Castro’s fate hangs in the balance.
Accusations claim that Mr. Castro accepted around BRL 400,000 (USD 71,000) in bribes between 2017 and 2019. If charged, he would be the latest in a line of corrupt Rio governors, with previous cases leading to arrests and convictions.
Evidence includes testimonies from associates and incriminating images, but Castro’s defense challenges the investigative process. As the legal battle unfolds, all eyes remain on Rio’s political landscape.
