Chinese officials continued to protest against the “2+2” meeting of Japanese and US defence and foreign ministers in Tokyo, raising concerns over China’s internal affairs and maritime issues. They demanded Japan to adopt a rational view of China and stop provoking confrontations in the region.
The allies were accused of smearing China and attacking its actions in the South and East China seas. Japan and the US expressed grave concern over China’s military cooperation with Russia and its nuclear arsenal expansion.
The ministers discussed extended deterrence, reinforcing the alliance’s deterrence posture, and managing strategic threats through deterrence and arms control.
Chinese officials urged the US and Japan to abandon cold war thinking regarding nuclear weapons, emphasizing China’s minimum nuclear capacity for national security.
They called on Japan to reassess its strategic security policies and adhere to its non-nuclear principles. Reportedly, Washington and Tokyo plan to compile a joint document on extended deterrence within the year.
