Outcry in Majdal Shams: Residents Chant ‘War Criminal’ at Netanyahu
Residents of Majdal Shams in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights expressed their anger towards Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during his visit to the town following a deadly strike that killed 12 children. Chanting phrases like “Killer! Killer!” and “War criminal”, the locals made it clear that Netanyahu was not welcome. The premier did not acknowledge the demonstrators, vowing a “severe response” to the incident.
Accompanying Netanyahu was the head of Israeli intelligence, Shin Bet, who also faced the anger of the mourners. Extremist Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich was kicked out as well. The attack on Majdal Shams, blamed on Hezbollah by Israel, has escalated tensions in the already volatile region, sparking fears of further conflict.
The incident has shed light on the Golan Heights’ Druze population, who largely identify as Syrian and have faced discriminatory policies under Israeli rule. The town, with residential status in Israel, has been marred by violence, with casualties on both sides.
