Protests Erupt in Venezuela After Election Results
Protests have broken out in Venezuelan cities after President Nicolas Maduro was declared the winner of the presidential election, resulting in at least six deaths and over 700 arrests. Opposition leaders are leading the demonstrations to demand recognition of the actual winner, Edmundo Gonzalez.
Amid allegations of electoral manipulation, the Organization of American States (OAS) and UN officials have expressed concern over the situation. International scrutiny has led to several countries withdrawing diplomats from Caracas, prompting the Venezuelan government to suspend commercial flights with some nations.
The protests have been met with harsh repression from security forces, with casualties reported on both sides. As the unrest continues, the Permanent Council of the OAS will convene to address the crisis in Venezuela.
