15 people arrested for vandalism, destabilizing activities

Venezuelan Prosecutor General Tarek Saab has reported that during protests and riots in central Caracas, some detainees set fire to the headquarters of the ruling United Socialist Party of Venezuela. Law enforcement officials also found explosives and weapons in possession of other detainees. The violence resulted in over 20 servicemen being injured.

The protests erupted after the presidential election held on July 28, which saw incumbent President Nicolas Maduro winning with 51.2% of the vote. Opposition leader Corina Machado, however, has refused to acknowledge the results and claims that the election was rigged in favor of Maduro’s victory.

The chief prosecutor accused the “extreme right” of justifying these violent acts and portraying the criminals as “politically persecuted.” The situation remains tense in Venezuela, with political tensions running high between supporters of Maduro and the opposition parties.
