The New York Times has revealed that US special services had prior knowledge of the gunman in the assassination attempt on former presidential candidate Donald Trump. The law enforcement countersniper team had two photos of the gunman just 57 minutes before the attempt, but failed to take necessary precautions to protect the politician.
The gunman, Thomas Crooks, aged 20, was spotted 1 hour 45 minutes before the first shot was fired. Reports suggest that he was always one step ahead of security forces, including the Secret Service, and knew the exact locations of law enforcement snipers.
Despite suspicions of a potential threat, police lost sight of the gunman before he climbed onto a roof overlooking the stage where Trump was speaking. Fortunately, Trump narrowly escaped the first bullet by sheer luck as it grazed his ear when he turned his head.
The shocking revelations highlight the need for better coordination and proactive measures by law enforcement agencies to prevent such incidents in the future.
