British Home Secretary Yvette Cooper announced the establishment of a new border security command during a session at the House of Commons. The aim of this new command is to tackle the issue of migrant crossings into British waters from France.
Cooper revealed that the new command will be equipped with additional cross-border police and counter terror powers to combat the growing problem of small boat crossings, which she referred to as a threat to border security and human lives, as criminal gangs profit from these dangerous journeys.
In response to a question from lawmaker Lee Anderson, who suggested ceasing payments to the French if they continue to enable this illegal trade, Cooper emphasized the need for international collaboration in addressing this issue. She highlighted the importance of working with law enforcement agencies across Europe to crack down on criminal gangs and prevent the boats from even reaching French shores.
