Telecom Operators’ Association Clarifies SIM Card Disconnection Amidst Planned Protest
The Association of Licensed Telecommunication Operators of Nigeria has stated that the recent disconnection of SIM cards by mobile operators is unrelated to the planned national protest set to commence on August 1.
The disconnections are part of a scheduled exercise to align National Identification Numbers with SIM registration records, set to conclude on July 31, 2024. This exercise was initially planned for April 15, 2024, but was postponed following subscriber challenges. The Federal Government mandated SIM card blocks for those not linked to NINs in 2020 as a security measure amidst rising terrorist attacks and kidnappings.
The telcos association emphasized their commitment to supporting government efforts and ensuring data privacy and security. Human rights lawyer Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa raised concerns about potential internet restrictions during the planned protest, urging the NCC to ensure uninterrupted internet access as a fundamental right.
As the people prepare to advocate for better living conditions and economic reforms, it is important for telecommunications companies to cooperate and promote democratic rights without obstructing free speech and assembly.
