In a shocking revelation, medical workers in Sudan have reported horrific cases of sexual violence perpetrated by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in front of families. Women were raped in front of their children and husbands, young girls as young as nine were gang-raped, and women in Khartoum were abducted to be raped. Human Rights Watch published a report titled “Khartoum is not safe for women,” detailing the widespread sexual violence in Sudan’s ongoing civil war.
The report documented the stories of survivors of sexual violence between the ages of nine and 60, with at least 262 cases reported. Both the RSF and Sudanese Armed Forces were accused of bombing medical facilities and denying urgent medical care to civilians caught in the conflict. The climate of fear has led women to live in constant anxiety, with one woman admitting to sleeping with a knife under her pillow.
The report also highlighted the challenges survivors face in accessing abortion services due to medical professionals’ reluctance, legal obstacles, and lack of privacy in hospitals. The uptick in sexual violence cases has resulted in a crisis in training health personnel and ensuring survivors’ privacy during examinations.
