A Russian navy ship recently arrived in Cuba on a three-day stay, following the visit of a submarine and other naval vessels to the communist state off Florida’s coast. The Smolny training ship received a warm welcome with salvos from Cuban artillery upon its arrival in Havana’s harbor, attracting residents and tourists to catch a glimpse.
Accompanied by two other vessels, the ship is part of the Baltic Fleet group on a friendly visit to the Cuban capital, as stated by Russia’s embassy in Cuba on social media. This visit serves as another testament to the strong bond between the Russian and Cuban people.
The timing of this visit, amid tensions over the war in Ukraine, adds a layer of significance to the deployment which comes close to US territory. Notably, the history between Cuba and Russia dates back to the Cold War era, marked by the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962 when the presence of Soviet nuclear missile sites on the island nearly sparked conflict with the United States.
