Russia retaliates against Tokyo by banning 13 Japanese citizens, including top business executives, from entering the country. This move is a response to Tokyo’s sanctions against Moscow, which have affected over 1,000 people and 150 entities from Russia.
Among those banned are Toyota Chairman Akio Toyoda, Viber Rakuten Group CEO Hiroshi Mikitani, and Japan International Cooperation Agency President Akihiko Tanaka. Japan’s chief cabinet secretary, Yoshimasa Hayashi, criticized the ban, stating that it limits Japanese companies’ activities in Russia.
Russia has denounced the Ukraine-related sanctions imposed by the West and its allies, including Japan. The Kremlin considers Japan’s actions as unfriendly and aligned with the West. In response to Tokyo’s initial sanctions, Russia previously banned 63 Japanese individuals, which later extended to 384 lawmakers.
As a result, Moscow has ceased talks on a peace treaty with Japan and canceled an agreement allowing Japanese citizens to visit the Kuril Islands visa-free. The escalating tensions between the two countries continue to strain their diplomatic relations.
