Recycling organic waste to generate electricity is a sustainable solution for powering energy-intensive processes, according to scientists. A recent study conducted by the Russian Presidential Academy of National Economy and Public Administration (RANEPA) suggests that recycling manure from farm animals could assist in creating an electric power surplus for cryptocurrency mining in Russia.
The process involves installing anaerobic digestion systems on farms to capture methane gas emitted from manure decomposition. This methane can then be utilized to produce electricity, with some of it meeting farm needs and the rest powering Bitcoin mining operations.
Lead researcher Sodnom Budatarov believes that this approach not only covers the costs of recycling equipment but also enables investments in digital assets. The study emphasizes the importance of starting with pig and poultry farms, where a consistent volume of waste is generated.
Recent legislative developments in Russia indicate a move towards legalizing cryptocurrency mining, with proposed regulations overseen by the Ministry of Digital Development. RANEPA scientists advocate for integrating provisions in the law to legalize cryptocurrency mining based on electricity from organic waste processing.
