President Vladimir Putin recently met with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in Moscow to address the ongoing “escalation” in the Middle East. This meeting, aimed at mediating tensions between Syria and Turkey, marks the first time the two leaders have met since March of last year.
Putin expressed his concerns about the worsening situation in the region, particularly in Syria, during the discussion. The Russian leader’s intervention in 2015 played a pivotal role in saving Assad’s government during the civil war.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has also hinted at the possibility of improving relations with Damascus, indicating a shift in Turkey’s stance towards Assad’s regime. Erdogan’s focus has now turned to preventing the formation of a “terror corridor” in northern Syria and facilitating the return of Syrian refugees.
With ongoing military offensives in Syria, Turkey currently controls significant territory along the border, targeting various factions including Kurdish militias, Islamic State group jihadists, and forces loyal to Assad.
