Addressing South Sudan’s Economic Crisis: Finance Minister Faces Parliament

Newly appointed Finance and Planning Minister Marial Dongrin recently appeared before parliament to address concerns regarding South Sudan’s economic crisis. Members of parliament raised questions about the nine-month salary arrears for civil servants and organized forces, as well as the country’s revenue management.

President Salva Kiir highlighted the issue of officials diverting revenue to multiple accounts, affecting the country’s ability to meet national obligations. The delay in passing the 2024/2025 budget also raised concerns about government spending without a formal budget in place.

Minister Dongrin assured the parliament that his ministry was working on reform policies to stabilize the economy, although specific details were not disclosed. The proposed reforms are expected to address the economic crisis through policy and administrative interventions, with potential inclusion in the upcoming budget.

The parliament remains eager to uncover the truth behind alleged money theft by top officials, as highlighted by President Kiir. Minister Dongrin’s upcoming reforms aim to tackle these challenges and lead South Sudan towards economic recovery.
