MSDF’s Kure base struggles with recruitment as youth show reluctance

In the scorching heat of early June, around 100 cadets at the Maritime Self-Defense Force’s Kure base in Hiroshima Prefecture participated in a synchronized traditional boat drill in Kure Bay. The dedication and determination of these cadets are truly inspiring as they hone their skills for future missions.

One such cadet, Mirei Tanouchi, 18, shared her aspirations of serving society through overseas missions and various activities. Hailing from Kagawa Prefecture, Tanouchi recently joined the corps after graduating high school and is now a seaman apprentice at the Kure Recruit Training Center.

At the training center, many new recruits, like Tanouchi, are being trained in the fundamentals of their roles within the Self-Defense Forces. While the core teachings have remained constant, the methods of instruction have evolved significantly over the years to adapt to changing scenarios and technologies.
