Yoon Suk-yeol’s wife, Mrs. Kim Geon-hee, will deliver handwritten letters expressing gratitude to 19 countries’ UN Korean War veterans and their families who are visiting Korea to commemorate ‘UN Forces Participation Day’ (July 27) on the 29th.
The Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs announced that Mrs. Kim will display the handwritten letters directly written by her on a screen during the UN Korean War veterans’ gratitude dinner at Sofitel Ambassador Seoul on the evening of the 29th, which will be read by Minister Kang Jung-ae.
In the letter, Mrs. Kim stated, “Over 70 years ago, when South Korea was in crisis due to North Korea’s surprise invasion, you came from afar to protect the freedom of a distant country, South Korea, and fought under the flag of the UN. With your great courage and noble sacrifices, you protected South Korea.”
She added, “South Korea has emerged from the ruins of a brutal war to become a global economic power and is now fulfilling its role as a proud member of the international community.”
Mrs. Kim promised, “South Korea will forever remember the Korean War veterans. We will not forget the hard work of the families who silently dedicated themselves in the background. I hope your short stay in Korea will be cherished as a meaningful and happy memory.”
The letter, signed ‘2024. 7. Mrs. Kim Geon-hee, spouse of the President of South Korea,’ will be delivered to 35 representative families of the 67 UN Korean War veterans and their families participating in this invitation visit, along with Korean and translated versions in each country’s language.
Charles Lusardi (92), a US Korean War veteran and president of the Korean War Veterans Society of Oregon, will present a quilt handcrafted from neckties donated by US veterans to President Yoon Suk-yeol and Mrs. Kim Geon-hee through Minister Kang Jung-ae.
