Mumbai: The Maharashtra government has established a six-member committee to investigate the tragic collapse of an illegal hoarding in Ghatkopar, Mumbai, which resulted in the loss of 17 lives. Led by former Chief Justice of the High Court Dilip Bhosle, the committee includes key officials such as the Director General of Police, and a structural engineer from IIT Bombay.
The incident, which occurred on May 13, led to the death of 17 individuals and left 74 injured after an iron hoarding collapsed on a petrol pump during a dust storm. The committee’s mandate includes probing the responsibilities of the involved entities, assessing their records, financial transactions, and possible collusion with officials.
Additionally, the committee will evaluate the approval and installation processes of hoardings on government and railway properties, and recommend improvements to prevent future tragedies. It will also suggest a review of hoarding policies on railway or police lands to prevent similar incidents.
Key areas of focus for the committee involve reviewing approval processes, safety protocols, land allotment procedures, and proposing policy changes to enhance safety and prevent illegal operations.
