The Harambe Initiative Uganda (HIU) is challenging the notion that more people mean better results. They are pushing for a referendum to reduce the number of representatives in the Ugandan parliament, claiming that a smaller legislative body would produce higher quality legislation. HIU argues that fewer representatives would lead to more efficiency and better decision-making.
They point to historical examples of smaller representative bodies being more effective than larger ones. The group is specifically targeting the current system where each district sends a woman representative to parliament, proposing instead a regional representation system with only 15 women. They are also advocating for the removal of non-geographical interest groups in parliament.
While HIU’s campaign is gaining traction, the state is cracking down on corruption and tribalism that have plagued cooperative efforts in Uganda. The shift towards individualism has weakened community cooperation, affecting areas like sanitation and economic development. Despite these challenges, HIU remains determined to push for a more streamlined legislative body in Uganda.
