Lagos State Government Vows to Prosecute Culprits of Building Collapse
The Lagos State government has expressed its determination to prosecute the owner and engineer responsible for the two-storey building collapse that resulted in the death of five construction workers. The Special Adviser to the Governor on E-Geographic Information Services and Urban Development disclosed this during a site visit to the incident and inspection of other defective buildings in the estate.
The government cited reasons for prosecution including failure to revalidate existing construction permits, ignoring necessary notices, and allowing individuals to occupy the building without certification. The engineer has been arrested, while the owner remains at large. The government emphasized the need for proper certification before inhabiting buildings to prevent disasters like this from happening again.
Residents were also advised to ensure buildings have approval from the Lagos Planning Information Centre before renting. The government announced the revocation of all existing building commencement certifications and urged individuals to seek revalidation from the Lagos State Building Control Agency.
This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of following building regulations to protect citizens and prevent tragedies. Let’s strive for safe and compliant construction practices to safeguard lives.
