Israel’s military is under investigation for suspected abuse of a Palestinian detainee held in a detention camp following the war on Gaza. The inquiry was ordered by the Advocate General after reports of substantial abuse surfaced, prompting military police to investigate at the Sde Teiman detention site.
Rights groups have raised concerns about the treatment of detainees at the camp, which is set to be phased out. Amidst the investigation, civilian protesters, including far-right politicians, gathered outside the base, attempting to break in.
The break-in attempt was condemned by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defence Minister Yoav Gallant, while Lieutenant General Herzi Halevi defended the investigation as essential to upholding the military’s honor and values.
Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich voiced support for the soldiers, referring to them as heroes. This incident has added to international scrutiny on Israel’s treatment of detainees, with the US State Department also looking into the allegations.
Despite the protests, the military remains committed to investigating and holding accountable those responsible for any mistreatment of detainees.
