Iran and Gambia to Restore Diplomatic Relations
Iran and Gambia have announced they will restore diplomatic relations after a 14-year hiatus, with a focus on mutual respect and serving each nation’s interests. The decision follows recent meetings between Iranian and Gambian authorities, including talks between Foreign Minister Mamadou Tangara and Iran’s Acting Foreign Minister Ali Bagheri Kani.
Tangara traveled to Tehran for the swearing-in ceremony of Iran’s President, Masoud Pezeshkian. Both countries have agreed to develop friendly relations based on mutual respect, equality, and common interests. They also plan to expand cooperation in political, economic, investment, trade, and culture sectors, with embassies in Dakar acting as the diplomatic channel.
In 2010, Gambia cut ties with Iran without giving a reason. Tehran attributed the move to US pressure. This new agreement signals a positive step towards renewed collaboration between the two nations.
