A law banning almost all abortions after six weeks has been implemented in Iowa, with restrictions only for specific cases.

This law, signed by the state’s Republican governor Kim Reynolds, is among the most stringent in the US since the national right to abortion was revoked.

The ban is expected to push Iowa residents to seek abortion services in neighbouring states with more lenient laws.

Despite its popularity in polls, nearly two-thirds of Iowans believe abortion should be legal in most cases.

With the upcoming election, Democrats plan to rally support for abortion rights, while Vice-President Kamala Harris vows to restore reproductive rights if elected.
