The International Court of Justice Ruling: UK Urged to Stop Arms Sales to Israel
The recent landmark ruling by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) declared Israel’s 57-year occupation of Palestinian land illegal. As a result, human rights lawyer Professor Philipe Sands has called for the UK to cease arms sales to Israel to comply with the ruling.
The ICJ specifically ordered Israel to halt all settlement activities in the West Bank, East Jerusalem, and Gaza, deeming the occupation in breach of international law. Sands emphasized that the UK must not provide military aid that could assist Israel in maintaining its unlawful presence in the occupied territories.
The ongoing conflict in Gaza has shed light on Israel’s aggressive policies towards Palestinians, prompting calls for the UK government to review its arms sales to Israel. Foreign Secretary David Lammy revealed that a comprehensive review of Israel’s compliance with international humanitarian law is underway.
