In a historic move, Yemen’s Houthi group has announced the resumption of direct flights between Sanaa and both Egypt and India, marking the first flights from Sanaa to Cairo and Mumbai in nearly a decade.
Yemenia Airways, the national airline of Yemen, confirmed that there will be a daily flight between Sanaa and Cairo, as well as two weekly flights between Sanaa and Mumbai.
This decision comes as part of an agreement brokered by UN envoy Hans Grundberg to de-escalate the economic conflict between the Yemeni government and the Houthis.
The agreement also includes the cancelation of recent decisions against banks by both parties, the resumption of flights between Sanaa and Jordan, and the operation of flights to Cairo and India.
After over two years of de-escalation, Yemen has been slowly recovering from the conflict that began in 2015, pitting the Yemeni government supported by a Saudi-led coalition against the Houthi group, backed by Iran, which controls strategic areas in the country, including the capital Sanaa.
