Channel 13 in Israel struggles to maintain independence

Israeli Supreme Court is set to decide the fate of Channel 13, Israel’s second most-watched TV channel, with the appointment of Yulia Shamalov-Berkovich as news director causing controversy. Bringing ‘more variety’

Despite the program’s popularity, Channel 13 management claimed the decision was for “more variety” in programming. However, many believe it was in response to Drucker’s investigation into Transport Minister Miri Regev, revealing corruption allegations. This move is seen as part of the government’s broader strategy to control media, exemplified by the recent ban on Al-Jazeera throughout Israel.

The removal of “Ezor Milhama” is emblematic of the government’s attempts to silence media criticism, following a recent wave of censorship. Journalists and media outlets are now facing increasing pressures from governmental authorities, threatening freedom of speech in the country.
