Armenia’s Hraparak daily reports that the government is taking steps to improve oversight in the field of space activities. Despite boasting about launching the first Armenian satellite, Hayasat 1, in 2020, it was discovered that proper supervision was lacking.
Unfortunately, the satellite did not benefit Armenia and caused interference with other countries’ satellites. Deputy Minister Avet Poghosyan, who oversaw the project, was reportedly dismissed due to this failure, although he denies any wrongdoing.
The government has now established a new checklist to ensure proper oversight in Armenia’s space activities. The Urban Development, Technical Standards, and Fire Safety Inspectorate has been tasked with monitoring and regulating this sector.
It is crucial for Armenia to take corrective actions in order to effectively manage and benefit from its space activities in the future.
