Africa’s oldest liberation party ejects ex-president

Former South African President Jacob Zuma faces expulsion from the African National Congress (ANC) for leading a rival party in the recent elections. Zuma, who defected from the ANC to join the uMkhonto weSizwe party, accused the ANC of causing the collapse of “democratically elected structures” in the country. This move comes after Zuma’s resignation in 2018 due to corruption scandals during his presidency. Despite his expulsion, Zuma has the opportunity to appeal the decision within three weeks.

The ANC, which has been in power in South Africa since the end of apartheid, faced a significant loss in the elections, winning only 159 seats in the 400-member assembly. The MK party, led by Zuma, secured 58 seats. Cyril Ramaphosa, Zuma’s successor, was reelected as the president through a coalition with the center-right Democratic Alliance and smaller parties.

This development highlights the ongoing power struggle within South African politics and the implications it holds for the country’s future leadership.
