World Nature Conservation Day turned into a platform for advocacy, pushing lawmakers to pass more stringent environmental regulations and inspiring individuals and communities to embrace sustainable lifestyles.

People from all across the world gather to mark World Nature Conservation Day on July 28 annually. The occasion reminds us of how critical it is to preserve the environment and our natural resources for coming generations. It’s a call to action, imploring people, groups, and institutions of government to move proactively towards sustainable behaviours that safeguard the health of the planet.

World Nature Conservation Day History

World Nature Conservation Day was officially created during the 1972 United Nations Conference on the Human Environment in Stockholm, Sweden.

The United Nations General Assembly recognised the urgent need for global environmental action when it formally designated July 28 as the day to promote awareness of the importance of protecting nature.

The day turned into a platform for advocacy, pushing lawmakers to pass more stringent environmental regulations and inspiring individuals and communities to embrace sustainable lifestyles.

World Nature Conservation Day Quotes

  • “And I dream of the vast deserts, the forests, and all of the wilderness of our continent, wild places that we should protect as a precious heritage for our children and our children’s children. We must never forget that we must protect this environment.”— Nelson Mandela.
  • “Earth provides enough to satisfy every man’s needs, but not every man’s greed.” — Mahatma Gandhi.
  • “We won’t have a society if we destroy the environment.” — Margaret Mead.
  • “The greatest threat to our planet is the belief that someone else will save it.” — Robert Swan.
  • “If conservation of natural resources goes wrong, nothing else will go right.” — M. S. Swaminathan.
  • “Nature is not a place to visit. It is home.” — Gary Snyder.
  • “The Earth does not belong to us: we belong to the Earth.” — Marlee Matlin.
  • “Look deep into nature, and then you will understand everything better.” — Albert Einstein.
  • “Conservation is a state of harmony between men and land.” — Aldo Leopold.
  • “Do not let selfish men or greedy interests kill your country of its beauty, its riches, or its romance.” — Theodore Roosevelt.

How Can We Make a Difference?

  1. Being the first generation to realise that we are harming the planet, we may also be the last to be able to stop it. One of your most powerful actions is to speak up, especially when you do it with those who need to hear it.
  2. The three R’s should be followed as a first guideline for preservation and making a difference: Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.
  3. Recycle single-use plastics wherever possible, such as straws, cotton buds, silverware, mugs, and so on.
  4. For short distances, walk or ride a bicycle.
  5. Switch to an electric car instead.
  6. When purchasing appliances, make sure to check their Energy Star ratings and choose the highest rating that is within your budget.
  7. Plant trees. Each tree serves as a little carbon sink. The shade provided by trees reduces the demand for cooling in our climate.
  8. Consume more locally grown, in-season food and discard less of it.
  9. Shop at the grocery and other places with reusable bags.
  10. Both you and the environment may gain by leading a less consumerist lifestyle.
