Japanese and US defense chiefs and top diplomats are convening in Tokyo today to enhance military cooperation, including upgrading the command and control of US forces and boosting American-licensed missile production in Japan. The focus is on countering the increasing threat posed by China.
The Japan-US Security Consultative Committee, known as “2+2” security talks, will bring together Secretary of State Antony Blinken, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, and their Japanese counterparts, Yoko Kamikawa and Minoru Kihara. They aim to reaffirm the alliance post President Joe Biden’s withdrawal from the presidential race.
The discussions include plans to enhance command and control structures for US forces in Japan, establishing a US counterpart for Japan’s unified command. This move signifies Japan’s evolving position from past hesitancy to openly address atomic weapons.
Furthermore, the trilateral defense talks with South Korea aim to institutionalize high-level exchanges. Japan’s increased military cooperation with the US and South Korea underlines efforts to strengthen defense capabilities and the domestic defense industry.
