The Turkish parliament has greenlit a Presidential motion to dispatch troops to Somalia for two years as part of the Türkiye-Somalia defense cooperation agreement to bolster security against terrorism and other threats.
President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s signed motion emphasizes Türkiye’s decade-long commitment to providing training, assistance, and advisory support in Somalia. The goal is to enhance security, stability, and help restructure Somalia’s defense and security forces to combat terrorism.
Since 2009, the Turkish military has actively supported global efforts to combat piracy, armed robbery, and maritime terrorism in the Gulf of Aden and surrounding regions. This support aligns with international agreements and UN resolutions.
The Turkish parliament recently extended the mandate to lead Combined Task Force-151 starting in July. The motion underscores the economic challenges hindering the development of Somali defense and security forces.
The Somali government aims to strengthen its maritime control and integrate resources into the economy to boost security forces and state institutions. This aligns with the Somali Security Sector Development Plan set at a conference co-hosted by Türkiye in New York.
