Police clash with Ogun youths, 20 arrested over traditional festival

Ikenne town in Ogun State was thrown into turmoil as youth defied the government’s ban on celebrating the annual Oro festival, leading to clashes with police. Videos on social media depicted burning tyres and unrest in the town, with tensions escalating over the cancellation of the festival for the second year in a row.

An anonymous source attributed the crisis to a longstanding kingship dispute, with the government fearing potential violence if the festival went ahead. Despite warnings, some youths remained adamant about commemorating the festival, prompting police intervention and arrests.

State Commissioner of Police, Abiodun Alamutu, confirmed the unrest and revealed that 20 suspects had been apprehended. The situation, he explained, stemmed from the unresolved kingship conflict, emphasizing the need to maintain peace and uphold the government’s directive.

With tensions high and the situation under control, authorities are working to prevent further disruptions and ensure the safety of the community.
