A Tuareg separatist coalition claimed a significant victory over Mali’s army and Russian allies after intense fighting in a district near the Algerian border. The CSP-DPA alliance spokesperson stated that enemy columns were decisively defeated, with equipment seized and prisoners taken. Seven separatist fighters were killed in the battle.
Mali’s military leaders, who seized power in a 2020 coup, aim to regain control from separatist and jihadist forces, particularly in Kidal. Fighting erupted in Tinzaouatene district, surrounded by Algerian territory, with casualties on both sides.
Reports suggest that at least 15 Russian Wagner mercenaries were killed or captured. The Al-Qaeda-linked group JNIM claimed responsibility for an attack, but separatists disputed the claim. There have been allegations of human rights abuses by the army and its allies in the conflict-ridden region.
The junta, led by Colonel Assimi Goita since 2020, shifted alliances from France to Russia. The situation in Mali remains volatile with ongoing violence from various factions.
