Kenyan plant expert supporting African traditional medicine

BBC

Martin Odhiambo from Kenya is sharing his knowledge of traditional medicine and healing properties of plants with his community. Despite concerns, 80% of African countries rely on traditional medicine. Mr Odhiambo is promoting plant remedies for common illnesses, backed by traditional knowledge.

He believes in preserving indigenous knowledge and educating people about plant remedies. Working with the Trust for Indigenous Culture and Health, he manages a special garden of medicinal plants at a museum, where he hosts weekly talks.

The talks cover various plant remedies for health issues, focusing on traditional uses and cultural contexts. While scientific validation remains a challenge, Mr Odhiambo hopes to formalize traditional medicine practices in Kenya for a safer and regulated approach.
