Odisha Government Alerts Seven Districts as Hirakud Dam Releases First Flood Water
In a proactive move, the Odisha government has issued a high alert to collectors of seven downstream districts as the Hirakud Dam authorities released the first flood water of the season into the river Mahanadi. The authorities opened sluice gate number seven after a customary puja, with a total of 20 gates planned to be opened in three phases to manage the excess water due to heavy rainfall in the upper catchment areas.
As per the latest data, the water level at Hirakud Dam stood at 616.93 ft against its full reservoir capacity, prompting the government to anticipate a discharge of around 4.50 lakh cusecs at Khairmal and 5 lakh cusecs at Mundali. Collectors have been instructed to warn residents and prevent any activities near the riverbank to avoid any untoward incidents, with the District Emergency Operation Centre being manned by senior officers for monitoring.
This proactive measure aims to ensure the safety of residents and livestock in the downstream areas, emphasizing the importance of maintaining vigilance during such critical situations.
