France’s national rail operator, SNCF, has successfully completed repairs on infrastructure damaged in a suspected arson attack, with most trains now running as scheduled. The incident, described as “sabotage” by officials, aimed to disrupt high-speed TGV lines leading to and from Paris, affecting hundreds of thousands of passengers before the Olympic Games’ opening ceremony.
Staff worked tirelessly to manually repair fibre optic cables on multiple lines, preventing further damage to safety equipment. Currently, the main western line from Paris is operating normally, while the northern line from Lille is running three out of four TGV trains with no delays expected.
Friday’s disruptions impacted around 250,000 passengers, with estimates suggesting up to 800,000 individuals could be affected over three days. Eurostar, which operates international services between London and Paris, also faced service interruptions.
Among those affected was Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, who had to alter travel plans for the Olympic Games’ opening ceremony. The Paris prosecutor’s office has initiated a criminal investigation into the incident, managed by its organized crime department.
