The Democratic Party and the Innovation Party conducted an on-site investigation into the alleged misuse of corporate credit cards during Lee Jin-sook’s tenure as CEO of Daejeon Cultural Broadcasting (MBC) without submitting evidence, claiming she exceeded the credit card limit and took unauthorized leave.
Members of the National Assembly’s Science, Technology, Information, Broadcasting and Communications Committee from the ruling and opposition parties held a press conference on the 28th, stating that evidence of private misuse of the corporate card has emerged and accused Lee of exceeding the limit and failing to submit any evidence.
The opposition also raised suspicions that Lee took unauthorized leave and traveled abroad before submitting a letter of resignation in late 2017, citing missing card usage records during that period.
The opposition lawmakers are questioning whether Lee’s prepayment at bakeries in Seoul and Daejeon on the day of her retirement as the head of Daejeon Cultural Broadcasting was considered a misuse of resources and are calling for a thorough investigation of the matter.
The opposition has vowed to hold Lee accountable for any illegal activities uncovered during the investigation and has stated that she should be subject to legal action.
In response, Lee stated that the corporate credit card was used within the allocated limit and that she was not aware of the processing of evidence or documentation after card use. She also denied the allegations of unauthorized leave and overseas travel, stating that she used vacation time as needed.
