Nuclear power can provide a reliable source of low-carbon energy to combat climate change. China’s Tsinghua University has developed a “meltdown-proof” nuclear power plant design, utilizing pebble-bed reactors to prevent overheating and meltdown risks. The innovative design uses helium gas coolant and spherical pebbles made of uranium fuel, carbon, and silicon carbide coating.
The pebbles can withstand high temperatures and naturally circulate heat when pumps are off, ensuring safety. The reactors were successfully tested, demonstrating rapid shutdown and temperature stabilization. This advancement in nuclear energy safety could lead to a cleaner and safer future, reducing dependence on coal and mitigating the risks of traditional nuclear plants.
