Bangladesh is set to restore mobile internet services in the country on Sunday, following a nationwide blackout aimed at quelling violent protests. The Minister of Telecommunications, Zunaid Ahmed Palak, announced that the mobile network would be back online at 3:00 p.m. local time after the restoration of fixed-line broadband connections earlier in the week.
The unrest began over disputes regarding government job quotas, leading to deadly clashes and the suspension of internet and text message services for over a week. The country’s Supreme Court recently overturned most quotas on government jobs, following widespread protests led by students that turned violent and claimed the lives of over 100 people.
With tensions still high, Bangladesh moves towards a return to normalcy by reinstating vital communication services. The government’s actions reflect efforts to address the underlying issues fueling the unrest and pave the way for dialogue and reconciliation.
