After 10 days of blackout due to student protests, Bangladesh has restored mobile internet services. The government suspended mobile internet on July 17 and broadband services on July 18 due to escalating violence. In response to the inconvenience caused to customers, the government has announced a 5 GB data bonus for three days.
The unrest began on July 15 when student protesters demanded the end of a job quota that reserved 30% of government jobs for veterans’ relatives. In response, the Supreme Court ordered the government to reduce the quota to 5% for veterans’ descendants and limit quotas for ethnic minorities, transgender people, and disabled individuals to 2%.
Law enforcement agencies have launched extensive raids across Bangladesh amid the protests, causing widespread apprehension. In Dhaka, strategic operations are being conducted to target specific areas and prevent suspects from escaping. The “block raid” tactic involves thorough searches of homes based on intelligence to apprehend those suspected of involvement in the unrest.
