Are Sinclair Oil and Dangote Refineries comparable in size?

The Truth Behind Seun Kuti’s Claim about Dangote Refinery

Recently, popular Afrobeats singer Seun Kuti caused a stir on Instagram when he claimed that the Federal Government spent $2 billion for a 20 per cent stake in Dangote Refinery, while the same amount was used to buy the entire Sinclair Refinery in America. Kuti alleged that both refineries were of the same size.

However, findings revealed that the Dangote Refinery, built by Aliko Dangote, is the world’s largest single-train facility, producing 650,000 barrels per day. On the other hand, Sinclair Oil Company operates two smaller refineries in Wyoming, processing a total of 110,000 barrels per day.

Energy experts have debunked Kuti’s claims, pointing out that the Dangote Refinery is a state-of-the-art facility with massive capacity, unlike the smaller Sinclair refineries. The Federal Government’s investment in Dangote Refinery has been a strategic move to boost Nigeria’s energy sector.

While Seun Kuti may have good intentions, the facts show that his claims are unfounded. It is essential to verify information before spreading misinformation.
