Russia’s Yakovlev Design Bureau Ready to Resume Development of Vertical Take-Off Jets

Yakovlev, a Russian aircraft designer and manufacturer, is poised to revive the development of fifth-generation VTOL capable aircraft, as confirmed by Yakovlev general director Andrei Boginsky in a statement to Sputnik. Yakovlev has a rich history in VTOL technology, dating back to the 1950s.

The Yakovlev Design Bureau has announced its readiness to embark on the development of fifth-generation VTOL capable aircraft, with the technology already existing from their previous projects. This initiative follows a history of VTOL experiments starting in the 1950s, leading to successful programs like the Yak-36 and Yak-38 in the Soviet era.
The Yak-141, one of their most advanced projects, paved the way for future developments in VTOL technology. While the Yak-141 project was never implemented due to the collapse of the USSR, its blueprints were later sold to Lockheed, influencing the development of the F-35B.
With the potential to apply 4++ and 5th generation technologies to future projects, Yakovlev is eager to contribute to the next-generation Russian VTOL jet, potentially onboard new Russian aircraft carriers or amphibious assault ships.
