European Countries Consider Thawing Ties with Syria

Eight European countries are contemplating changing their approach towards Syria. The foreign ministers of Italy, Austria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Cyprus, Greece, Slovenia, and Slovakia have expressed their willingness to reengage with Syrian President Bashar Assad.

They proposed the creation of an EU-Syria envoy to reinstate a Syrian ambassador to Brussels and establish 10 ‘safe zones’ in Syria’s government-held territories for the return of Syrian migrants in Europe. Germany, although not signatory to the letter, recently had a court ruling stating there is no longer a general danger to civilians in Syria.

Despite calls from human rights observers and analysts about the ongoing conflict and humanitarian crisis in Syria, European nations are considering renewing ties with the Assad regime. This move could potentially boost Assad’s legitimacy but may also lead to the lifting of sanctions and economic benefits for the war-torn country.

While the situation in Syria remains complex and fragmented, experts believe that a new approach is needed to address the security and economic challenges faced by Syrians on the ground.
