Vijender Singh: Athletes’ Right to Request Personal Coaches at Olympics 2024

Olympic medalist Vijender Singh supports athletes choosing their own coaches at global events, emphasizing the importance of personal coaching. He highlighted the success he achieved by having the freedom to select his coaches and sparring partners during his amateur boxing career.

In the ongoing Paris Olympics, many Indian athletes have opted to bring their personal coaches, leading to discussions on the necessity of such arrangements with federation-appointed national coaches present.

Vijender also praised the impact of social media on athletes, stating that it has empowered them to voice concerns and receive support by sharing their stories online. He noted the significant improvements in facilities and communication compared to his time as a competitive boxer.

The Olympic contingent in Paris includes 140 support staff, with a majority being personal coaches requested by athletes. Vijender believes that meeting the demands of athletes during training camps is vital for their performance.
