In a bid to combat insurgency threats from neighbouring Mozambique, the United States has initiated talks with Tanzania for potential support interventions. This comes at a time when Chinese troops have landed in Dar es Salaam for joint military drills with similar objectives.
The US State Department’s acting under-secretary for political affairs John Bass expressed optimism about strengthening the security partnership to address terrorist challenges facing Tanzania’s southern border. Meanwhile, three Chinese warships arrived in Dar es Salaam, carrying troops for joint counter-terrorism exercises.
Tanzania has been keen on preventing the conflict between rebel elements and Mozambique army forces in Cabo Delgado province from spilling over into its territory. The insurgency in Mozambique has claimed over 4,000 lives and displaced almost a million people since 2017.
China announced that the joint military exercises with Tanzania and Mozambique will focus on enhancing troop capabilities in counter-terrorism operations. The US is also looking to deepen cooperation with Tanzania in various sectors during this critical time.
