Survival amidst devastation: Life in Gaza’s Shejaiya neighborhood

Palestinians in the devastated Shejaiya neighborhood in eastern Gaza City are struggling to survive amid a lack of basic services, food shortages, and infrastructure destruction as the Israeli onslaught continues. Abu Mohammad Hajila and his family scavenge for wood and paper to start a fire, salvaging what they can from the remains of their destroyed home. The food shortage crisis in Gaza City is worsening, posing a severe threat to lives. Following intense Israeli bombardment, the area has been declared an “uninhabitable disaster zone.” The residents face psychological pressure, stress, and limited access to necessities like food and medicine.

Another resident, Abu Mohammad Al-Harazin, reflects on their dire living conditions after their home was partially destroyed multiple times. The ongoing Israeli offensive on Gaza has resulted in a high number of casualties and widespread destruction, drawing international condemnation. Amid a crippling blockade, Gaza’s infrastructure lies in ruins, with many residents struggling to access essential resources.
