Parties deny wrongdoing in phone tapping case

The investigation into allegations of phone tapping involving Greece’s National Intelligence Agency (EYP) and the Greek police’s Counterterrorism Division has revealed no evidence of the use of the Predator snooping software. Judicial officials, led by Supreme Court Deputy Prosecutor Achilleas Zisis, are carefully examining the evidence from the case, which includes the tapping of cellphones belonging to government and opposition politicians.

Following a thorough review of the data, experts found that while some cellphone numbers were illegally tapped, others had been legally monitored by EYP with the approval of prosecutors. EYP officials, including former director Panagiotis Kontoleon, have denied any involvement with the Predator software. Despite allegations of collusion with private companies accused of using Predator, EYP maintains that legal tapping is conducted within Greek borders and that no contracts were signed with the companies in question.

Witnesses, including former officials and government employees, have testified to the innocence of EYP and its officials in the case. All legal documents related to the investigation are available on Kathimerini’s website for further review.
