Lawyers in Morocco rallied in front of the parliament building in Rabat to protest a controversial draft Code of Civil Procedure law approved by the House of Representatives. The lawyers, represented by the Association of Lawyers Associations in Morocco, decried the draft as a “legislative scandal” that undermines legal and human rights progress in the country.
The protest, led by Hatim Bakkar and supported by Khalid Al-Marouni, criticized the draft for violating constitutional principles and hindering access to justice. The lawyers questioned the Justice Minister’s defense of the draft, arguing that it threatens core legal rights and fairness in the judicial process.
The protest, as described by Bakkar, is a historic stand to protect the legal rights of Moroccans and ensure that legislative changes support justice. Despite criticisms that the protest is driven by self-interest, the lawyers reaffirmed that their opposition is rooted in principles of fairness and equality.
Lawyers, including Mohamed Almo, emphasized the importance of the Code of Civil Procedure in regulating access to justice and called for a re-evaluation of the draft’s provisions before finalization.
