Rising Malarial Treatment Resistance in Eastern Africa: A Call to Action
Urgent action is needed to address the rising malarial treatment resistance in eastern Africa, as highlighted in a recent Policy Forum. Artemisinin-based combination therapies (ACTs) have been the cornerstone of malaria treatment, but Artemisinin-Resistance (Art-R) in malaria-causing parasites poses a significant threat to public health in the region.
The success of containing Art-R in Asia provides a blueprint for addressing the issue in Africa. A multipronged approach, including triple ACTs (TACTs), enhanced surveillance, rapid diagnosis, and community health worker networks, is crucial to combatting ART-R in Africa. Malaria vaccination, vector control measures, and regular monitoring of drug resistance are also essential components of a comprehensive strategy.
International organizations like the Global Fund to Fight Aids, Tuberculosis and Malaria have played a vital role in containing ART-R in Asia and must continue to support efforts in Africa. Without urgent and coordinated action, the rising antimalarial resistance in Africa could undo decades of progress in the fight against malaria, leading to increased sickness and death in vulnerable populations.
