Foreign Minister Yoko Kamikawa of Japan and her South Korean counterpart, Cho Tae-yul, emphasized the significance of collaboration in upholding a free and open Indo-Pacific region. In their discussions held in Vientiane, Laos, they committed to addressing North Korea-related issues through coordinated efforts involving Japan, South Korea, and the United States.
They also deliberated on Japan’s proposal to designate wartime labor-linked gold mines on Sado Island as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site. Prior to the meeting, a South Korean official hinted at Seoul’s willingness to support this UNESCO listing, with a request for the establishment of an exhibition and memorial facility to commemorate those forced to work in the mines during World War II.
With the approaching 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Japan and South Korea, Kamikawa and Cho pledged to enhance bilateral cooperation for the mutual benefit of both nations. This commitment reflects their shared goal of bolstering ties and fostering a stronger partnership moving forward.
