Former Israeli captive in Gaza Liat Atzili reveals her remarkable experience to Haaretz, stating that her captors treated her with humanity in contrast to Palestinian prisoners in Israeli custody.
Atzili, an Israeli-American, spent 54 days as a captive of Hamas in Gaza, where she was held in an apartment in Khan Yunis. During her captivity, she was treated kindly, allowed to shower, provided with food, and engaged in conversations with her captors.
Moment of Capture
Atzili described how she was taken by two armed men who assured her safety and comfort. Despite the blockade imposed by Israel leading to a shortage of food in Gaza, Atzili, a vegetarian, was provided with special meals, including pizza.
‘God Bless You’
As part of a prisoner exchange, Atzili was eventually released along with another captive. She shared how conversations humanized the guards, alleviating initial fears, and ended with well wishes upon her release.
